INTRODUCING ‘1 MILLION STEPS FOR CAUDA EQUINA SYNDROME’

On January 29 2021, Cauda Equina Champions Charity are launching their first ever ‘1 Million Steps for CES’ campaign.

The UK’s official Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) charity are asking people to step into the New Year and help raise awareness of the condition by getting out there, walking for a better mental health and supporting those people that they may know or loved ones that have permanent disabilities resulting from the syndrome.

This month has seen the charity’s first clients take advantage of free guided meditation courses to help them manage pain and mental wellbeing. The money raised will help support more people in need of the services, which also includes a national helpline, support group meetings and much needed post-operative information.

Cauda Equina Champions Charity have also delivered their first training to medical students from a range of disciplines including nurses, physios, post grad doctors and radiographers.

Claire Thornber, Founder of the charity commented: “It has been extremely successful and we will roll the training out over the coming year. It is important to get our message through to these newly qualified medics to improve outcomes for CES patients of the future.

“Through our work on the Helpline it has become apparent services accessible to patients with CES are being withdrawn, due to the impact of COVID therefore, it is more important than ever to offer any support we can in these difficult times and reach as many unsupported patients as possible.”

The launch of the campaign receives the continuing support and contribution of Sean Ash, a London emergency call handler, who recently has had emergency surgery.  Despite experiencing a complete Cauda Equina Syndrome and becoming paralyzed, he is walking a mile to raise funds for London

Ambulance Service. His last half mile will be completed on Friday and his final steps will be the first ones to launch the ‘1 Million Steps for CES’ fundraiser.

‘1 Million Steps’ allows everyone to get involved and be part of the campaign, even those chronically affected by the condition. Every single step counts towards the collective goal of one million.
